Where Queens Were Crowned Above the Clouds
Veszprém is one of Hungary's oldest cities, perched across seven hills northwest of Lake Balaton. Known as the "City of Queens" since the 13th century — when the Bishop of Veszprém was granted the exclusive right to crown Hungary's queens — this hilltop settlement has been a seat of royal and ecclesiastical power for over a millennium.
Its narrow Castle District, balanced on a dramatic limestone plateau above the Séd creek valley, holds a thousand years of layered history in barely 500 meters of cobblestone. Designated a European Capital of Culture in 2023, the city invested over 110 million euros renovating its cathedral, palaces, museums, and public spaces.
