Katowice is a city that refuses to be defined by its past. First mentioned in 1598 as a tiny Silesian village, it exploded into industrial prominence after receiving city rights in 1865. For over a century it was synonymous with coal. Three bloody Silesian Uprisings (1919–1921) wrenched the city from German hands into the reborn Polish state. Today, Katowice has reinvented itself as a UNESCO City of Music (2015), its former coal mines transformed into world-class museums and concert halls. The motto says it all: "From heavy industry to creative industries."
